#THEATRON

A live heritage performance

PostScriptum offers the modern audience a unique cultural experience in ancient theatre. A one hour performance in an open air theatre representing an authentic revival  of the birth of the theatre, ancient tragedy and comedy.

The audience relives the experience exactly the way it was in Classical Greece.  A guided tour back in time to the moment when ancient theatre was born inspiring the world of literature and the performing arts throughout the ages; even today’s movies and NetFlix. An experience enjoyed exclusively in Athens under the Acropolis on beautiful Filopappou Hill.

An open air theater, in the early morning light, sets the stage.

Spectators walk along a shady path lined with pines and laurels to the theatre. The magic of the amphitheatre brings the past to life. The audience is invited to play the same role as ancient theatergoers at the proagon, an event held the day before the Great Dionysia dramatic festival in Athens. On this occasion, the competing playwrights shared the topics of their plays and their views.  In today’s setting, the competitive dialogue in English between the tragic and comic poet compares genres, tragedy and comedy, speaks of the reality of life as it was and the importance of the theatre to the citizens of Athens.

Through the minds and eyes of the great poets, as well as scenes from their timeless plays performed in ancient Greek, the energetic spirit of ancient theatre is re-created. A professional, all male cast of actors and musicians capture the mood of the moment when theatre was born. The masks, costumes, shoes, ancient musical instruments and props are authentic replicas of the originals. The poets’ dialogue is in English and scenes from the plays are in ancient Greek with projected English titles.

The finale engages the audience to participate in an event on stage (the winner’s party in antiquity) to enjoy the festivities. Spectators have the opportunity to wear an ancient mask, walk in the “cothornoi”, high heel shoes, play the lyra and take photos with the cast. The level of personal participation touches the magic that has made theatre a part of history.

Experience the revival of ancient theatre, LIVE.

The performance is designed as an exact replica of the ancient theatre in every detail, created and staged by an experienced team of professionals knowledgeable in the theatre arts and   academic research. The language is ancient Greek with English titles, theatre props are copies of the originals and masks are made especially for the comedy and tragedy performances.

“THEATRON, The Way It All Began” is an experience that entertains and stimulates the mind and senses  offering “catharsis” (cleansing of the soul) as defined by Aristotle. The performance takes the viewer on a journey, from Dionysos, god of wine and ecstasy, the roots of ancient comedy  to Apollo, god of light and knowledge, the great dramatic plays of the Classical Era.
